The U opening stays genuinely open
The rear channel runs all the way through the back edge rather than ending as a small hole. That was the design detail I wanted and it is easy to see in person.

Which way round does it go?

The open U-channel goes at the back, against the backrest. The lower, scalloped front sits under your thighs.
