Will a seat and lumbar cushion fit your chair? A 3-minute check before you order

Four things to look at on the chair you actually sit in, what to do with a maybe, and how to set everything up on the day your set arrives.

Advertorial. Published by Ergola, which sells SitContour Duo. This guide is here to help you decide whether the set suits your chair, including when it doesn't.

A cushion set that doesn't suit your chair isn't a good deal at any price. So before you pick a colour or a bundle, spend three minutes with the chair you actually sit in. No tools needed: just the chair, your desk and you.

This check is written for SitContour Duo, a contoured memory-foam seat cushion and a separate lumbar cushion sold as one set. The same four questions are worth asking before you buy any seat or lumbar cushion.

Why fit comes first

The set is two pieces in two places. The seat cushion sits on your chair's seat. The lumbar cushion rests against the backrest, behind your lower back. The pieces aren't joined and no strap is supplied, so each one relies on its own part of your chair. That's why this check looks at the chair, the seat, the backrest and the desk one at a time.

Step 1 (30 seconds): Is the chair stable, with a backrest?

Give the chair a gentle push and rock it side to side. It should feel steady. Then look for a backrest. A chair that wobbles isn't a good base for any cushion, and stools or other seats without a backrest aren't a match for this set.

Step 2 (1 minute): Can the seat cushion sit fully on the seat?

Stand in front of the chair and look down at the seat. The seat cushion needs to sit fully and flat on it, without hanging over the front edge. Two seat shapes are a clear no:

  • Very small seats, where there isn't room for the cushion to sit fully on the seat.
  • Deeply bucketed seats that curve up steeply, so the cushion can't sit flat.

If your seat has a gentle curve and you can't tell which side it falls on, call it a maybe and email us the chair model.

A stable seat the cushion can sit fully on, plus a backrest: a match. A stool: not a match.

Step 3 (1 minute): Is there backrest where your lower back will be?

Sit all the way back. Notice where your lower back meets the backrest, and whether there's backrest surface there for a cushion to rest against. The lumbar cushion goes behind your lower back and rests against the backrest; there's no strap.

Then allow for height. The seat cushion raises you, so once it's in, your lower back will meet the backrest a little higher than it does now. Check there's backrest there too. If you know you want a lumbar cushion that straps on, this set isn't the one.

The lumbar cushion rests against the backrest, so the backrest needs to be there at lower-back height.

Step 4 (30 seconds): Will you still fit under your desk?

The seat cushion adds height. Sit at your desk and check the space between your thighs and the underside of the desk, and whether your feet have stable support. If it's already tight, check whether your chair can go lower, because you'll want to adjust it once the cushion is in.

Arrival day: set it up in order

  • 1Place the seat cushion flat on the chair's seat, contoured side up, and check that it sits securely.
  • 2Place the lumbar cushion against the backrest at your lower back, adjusting it separately from the seat cushion.
  • 3Sit down carefully. Adjust the chair so your feet have stable support and your legs still fit under the desk.
  • 4Lean forward and sit back a few times, and check that the lumbar cushion stays in place.
  • 5Recheck both pieces when you change position, and stop using any setup that feels unstable or uncomfortable.

While you're at it: the press test

Press your palm into the seat cushion and hold it. Slow-rebound memory foam gives way slowly instead of pushing back, and the dent fills back in when you lift your hand. For cleaning, follow the care label on each cushion.

Arrival day: seat cushion first, then the lumbar cushion, then sit down and check.

If it doesn't fit after all

Even a careful check can miss something, and that's what the 60-day home trial is for. It starts on delivery. Email info@ergola.co and we'll send a prepaid return label. Once your return arrives and is checked, the product price is refunded within 3–5 business days. Original delivery charges aren't refunded: that's $5.95 on a single set, and nothing on 2 or 3 sets, which ship free.

Orders dispatch in 1–2 business days, US delivery takes 5–7 business days after dispatch, and every set has a 1-year warranty.
